On Saturday, November 19, 2011, at approximately 3:45am, NHP officers responded to a vehicle accident on I-80 near mile marker 300, within Elko city limits.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. Jose Perez-Garcia, age 48, from Kearns, UT, was driving a 2002 GMC Yukon westbound on I-80 near mile marker 300.  Mr. Garcia lost control of the GMC on the icy/snow covered roadway.  The vehicle rotated clockwise and traveled off the right paved shoulder, down an embankment, and overturned.  Mr. Garcia was not wearing his seatbelt and sustained non life threatening injures.

The right front passenger, Brenda Aguilar, age 34, from Kerns, UT, was ejected from the vehicle.  She was not wearing her seatbelt and sustained fatal injuries at the scene.

There were two other passengers in the back seat, Mr. Jose Perez-Garcia (same name as driver), age 20, and a male juvenile, age 15.  Both were not wearing their seatbelts.  The juvenile was ejected from the vehicle.  Mr. Perez-Garcia sustained non life threatening injuries.  The juvenile sustained life threatening injuries and was transported to Salt Lake City.

Speed to fast for conditions is a contributing factor in this accident.
