CAAW’s annual Hannah Humanitarian Award Luncheon celebrate community leaders dedicated to ending domestic violence in Washoe County and raise funds to help victims rebuild safe and hopeful lives for themselves and their children. In Fiscal Year ’13-‘14 alone, CAAW provided 8.392 bed nights at the emergency shelter and transitional housing facilities for 234 women and 213 children, and processed more than 3,500 motions and protection orders for women and families in the northern Nevada community. In this same year volunteers and staff also responded to 10,000 requests through CAAW’s 24-hour crisis hotline and Vassar Street office.

The event also featured Brenda Clubine as the keynote speaker, who spent 26 years in prison for killing her abusive husband in self-defense. In 1983, before Battered Women’s Syndrome was recognized, Brenda was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 16 to life. It wasn’t until 2008 that Brenda was released from prison. Brenda has dedicated her life to educating others on domestic violence and helping organizations like CAAW that support victims of domestic violence.
