West Wendover Police Chief, Burdel Welsh, won job security and struck a blow for middle aged men the world over, by passing his physical with just 48 hours to spare on his dead line.

Welsh was hired in June 2013 and was given a year to pass the physical given by the Nevada Police Academy.

This June the 57 year old Welsh failed on his first attempt.

wrecaqua“I passed everything except the minimum run time,” he said. “So I requested and received a six month extension.

Welsh spent almost all of his free time training for the physical.

“Its a test normally given to cadets in their late teens to mid 20’s,” Welsh explained. “I am not going to lie and say it isn’t difficult for anyone with 50 plus year old knees.”

Welsh took the physical this Monday and passed even the timed run.

“I won’t say I aced it but a pass is a pass,” he added.

Shortly after his failed attempt in June the local rumor mill exploded with speculation that there was something corrupt about Welsh keeping his job while training for the retest.

centraphone“I was entitled to a six month extentsion,” Welsh said. “There was nothing wrong or under the table about it. I know their are some police officers and former police officers who may have a grudge, but I believe in transparency.”

Welsh, a lawman from Kansas, was chosen over several applicants both from inside the West Wendover Police Department and neighboring agencies.

As with most changes in leadership, Welsh’s arrival caused a voluntary in some cases and an involuntary leave taking from other officers.

If Welsh had not passed the physical the city council had several options open to it including giving Welsh leave to take the 14 week Police Academy course, to appointing him a civilian chief not permitted to be on patrol, to termination.
