The one time we talked with Tony Vera backlash year we liked him.
Sure we wouldn’t trust him with our wallet or our wife but we liked him.
Kind of similar to how we felt about Bill Clinton.
There are people like that personable rogues for whom we can only smile and shake our heads.
We are shaking our head now and if Mr. Vera is sentenced to life in prison we will shake our heads again.
Despite being a likable guy Mr. Vera really should spend the rest of his life in prison because as soon as he gets out he commits another crime.
He can’t help himself and therefore we can’t help him.
He has squandered every second chance he has ever received and one day in 20 or 30 years when he is too old or too sick to cause trouble he may get to breath free air again.
If he survives.
A new era in Wendover and Wells is about to dawn with the construction of the Long Canyon Mine.
We believe Long Canyon is but a first step it what could be a transfiguring economic and social revolution in this corner of Nevada.
How it will play out could be anyone’s guess.
But being optimists we are hopeful.
We are hopeful that the competition for good jobs and decent wages will bring an era of prosperity and dignity to a population that has had too little of either.
We spent a pleasant Passover in Salt Lake less than a block from the Mormon Temple and a mile from the Catholic and Episcopal Cathedrals. It was also Easter Week and Conference week so there was a whole lot of Holy going on.
What was incredibly nice was that everyone got along famously. No matter what our creed or our sect peace reigned between us and among us. We were proud to be human.
And then we returned to the real world and it seems as though the vaunted deal our president worked out the mad mullahs of Iran is even worse than expected.
Yes we know the straw man Obama likes to play that it is either a choice between this deal now or war.
First of all there is war going on right now. In Syria, Iraq and Yemen the forces of Shia Islam are battling Sunnah Islam for control of the world.
Yes it might seem silly but they believe it and with nuclear weapons it could even turn out to be true.
Thank you Barack Obama and John Kerry for bringing this nightmare so much closer to reality.
