One week shy of his High School graduation, 18 Year old Jeremy Cook?「どィび「s life was already about as rough as the road he was driving Friday night. With a mother one month into a year prison sentence and a ex-con father, the fact that Jeremy was graduating at all was almost a miracle. Even more of a miracle Jeremy a gifted welder was given a scholarship to Great Basin College and he planned on attending this fall. In the end though Jeremy would not march in cap and gown with his classmates he had grown up with. Jeremy would die alone on a lonely Nevada dirt road on a May night. ?「どィ?I knew that kid all his life,?「どィャ said Elko Under sheriff Rocky Gonzales. ?「どィ?such a shame such a waste.?「どィャ Jeremy was no boy scout and given his background no one could expect otherwise. According to Gonzales the boy also had run ins with the law. But still earning his high school diploma was no small feet. And many who knew him or of him hoped that making this milestone would be the first on a long road to success. ?「どィ?Drugs really tore that family apart,?「どィャ Gonzales said. ?「どィ?It should be a lesson on just how bad they can be.?「どィャ When Jeremy was just two years old he witnessed what few other toddlers ever will a helicopter raid on his family?「どィび「s farm in Montello by drug agents. Mickey Cook was arrested at his Pilot Valley Ranch about 20 miles northwest of Wendover in September 1993 first by Federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents based in Salt Lake City. The raid was part of an annual air search for marijuana fields in Utah?「どィび「s hinterlands conducted by federal, state and local law enforcement officers. ?「どィ?Operation Green Leaf?「どィャ as it is called, has discovered thousands of marijuana plants cultivated around Utah. According to estimates some twenty local, state, and federal law enforcement officers participated in the raid as well as three helicopters. While Mickey Cook escaped the most serious charges on a technicality, his presence put him on local law enforcement radar as a possible drug dealer and made finding employment very difficult. Jeremy?「どィび「s mother Debbie once described as the back bone of the family also fell to the allure of the drug culture. A long time dental assistant to a Wendover Doctor, Debbie Cook left her job and began to perform about ten years ago and began to perform tooth extract ions and according to police drug use from Montello. Arrested in 2005 she was convicted of simple possession of meth and began serving her one year minimum sentence this March at the Jean Prison for Women. It was in her cell she learned of her son?「どィび「s death. But while listed as a model prisoner and eligible to become a trustee, Debbie Cook was not allowed to to attend her son?「どィび「s funeral. The reasons for that decision vary depending on who one talks to and at what point in the conversation. According to Greg smith spokesman for the Nevada Department of Corrections Mrs. Cook either did not request to go or was not allowed to go either because according to Smith the Department of corrections on grants compassionate furloughs for four hours and Jean located in southern Nevada is much more than four hours away from Wendover. According to a source in Jean, Cook was also refused permission to go because there was no adequate holding facility near Wendover for Cook to be incarcerated overnight. And the third explanation was that Cook refused after being told she would be charged by the state not only for her transportation but also for her guards. ?「どィ?She refused to travel,?「どィャ Smith add. ?「どィ?I don?「どィび「t know why.?「どィャ For whatever reason the absence of his mother may mean that no memorial service will be held for Jeremy Cook robbed of pomp and circumstance by his death, he will be cremated quietly without fanfare and mostly alone.

, on 16-04-2008 11:08 Jeremy Cook might of had some hardships in his life, but he was a great person who was loved by all. His death was a great tragedy and he deserved so much better than what this newspaper gave him. In no way did his parents misfortunes have anything to do with who Jeremy was. He had so much heart. And if you truelly knew his family or even took the time to find out from others what his family was really like you would see they might of had some problems, but who doesn't. But they were both loving and devoted parents who would of done anything for their children. We were all truely blessed to have had Jeremy in our lives. We will always hold Jeremy close to our hearts and never forget what a beautiflul person he was. He wasn't just another statistic he was a son, a brother, a great friend. He was someone special who brought so much joy and laughter to all who's lives he touched. Instead of degrading and causing more hurt and pain to his family why don't you trying finding out what kind of parents he had. How devoted they were to their children. I'm sure their son would tell you he has nothing but fond memories of his childhood and what devoted parents he really had. But in the end your the ones who have to live with the guilt of what you wrote and the pain it brought.

2. Cold hearted much Written by Duranna Wendover'en, on 18-07-2007 01:18 Who ever posted this is a cruel , cold hearted individual, instead of digging up all of his families skeletons, you should have been focusing on the tragidy at hand , a 18 year old boy died , he was a great kid , and attempting to take the next step in life by finishing school . There is not ONE person in the world who doesnt have a F@#k up in the family , and that doesnt mean that they will be one also , this was a sickening article and to who ever wrote this , I hope you dont have children , and if you do , I feel sorry for them , because they will grow up to be small minded and cold hearted like you.

3. Remember.. Written by Amber, on 17-06-2007 13:12 I hope you remember that someone higher then you, or me or this whole world is looking down on you for what you wrote about poor Jeremy! I for one can say it will be YOU that die alone, Jeremy did not die alone, and he will forever live on in our hearts. Where as you will be forgotten over a small passing of time as will your newspaper. Jeremy was a wonderful person, as is his family. The family has been through so much because of you and I can only pray that you never have to endure the loss that they did. God forbid that the man loved his son and had to be the one to find him. Only to turn around and have you pour salt in his fresh wound! You should be ashamed of yourself! You should get down on your knees and beg for the lord to forgive you for such cruelities! We love you Jeremy, now, then and forever!

6. a letter to the editor Written by Leslie Stewart, on 30-05-2007 17:18 Dear Letter to the Editor of High Desert Advocate, The date today is May 29th, 2007. It窶冱 taken me two days since Jeremy Cook窶冱 graduation to even be able to respond to this so-called memorial, published by this so-called newspaper. First窶ヲI find it absolutely appalling that our 窶徭o-called窶 hometown newspaper would reduce one of our own children to this. Contrary to the 窶廣LMIGHTY窶 advocate (NOT), which obviously never talked to anyone 窶廬N THE KNOW窶 OUR Jeremy age 18, Of Pilot Valley left us on Friday, May 18th on his way HOME. He was SO loved by family, friends, and extended family between Wendover, Pilot Valley and Montello. If anyone I have ever known lived life to its max, it was our Jeremy窶ヲPushing the envelope always, always with that sparkle in his eye. Yes, our Jeremy was all boy, there窶冱 no doubt about it, but there is also no question, he was one of our beautiful kids, (all of ours). We were lucky enough to have him touch our lives. I pity you [advocate] you窶冤l never know and us we窶冤l never tell窶ヲ.We窶冤l never forget you Jeremy, we love you and we窶冤l keep you close. 窶彝ock on窶 Leslie Stewart Montello, NV R.I.P. nullnullnull
