While West Wendover city was breaking ground on its new government office building, partners for the town?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s newest development took the ceremonial shovels to the first phase of a half a billion project that if completed would double Wendover?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s population.
Preliminary work began last week on West Wendover first residential housing project in five years.
?¢‚Ǩ?ìWe started preliminary site prep Monday. Mostly it consist of clearing old construction debris other builders left on our land. We are still scheduled to started major construction in early April,?¢‚Ǩ¬ù said project partner Walt Sanders.

The early work is the first definite sign that as partner Norma Shubert said in a December presentation to the West Wendover city council this development was ?¢‚ǨÀúdifferent  than the several others in the recent past that never left the drawing board?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢.
In addition to the current site prep, partners have aggressively moved forward in offering plots for sale locally, regionally and even in Europe.
?¢‚Ǩ?ìWe are going full steam ahead with the project.?¢‚Ǩ¬ù Sanders said. ?¢‚Ǩ?ìWe have sold several lots in both the single family and in the Casita (condominium) subdivision.?¢‚Ǩ¬ù
The company is not confining the sales efforts to Nevada, the region or even north America. In fact Sanders said some of the greatest interest is coming from Europe.
?¢‚Ǩ?ìOur London sales office is reporting very high interest,?¢‚Ǩ¬ù Sanders said. ?¢‚Ǩ?ìI think it is because private property is so hard to come by and so restricted in Europe.?¢‚Ǩ¬ù
The company even has a United Kingdom based web site touting the Casita and offering time share plans.
Sanders added that construction on the project?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s first of two casinos, Wendover Hooters, could also begin at the same time.
The phase I Casino project will contain a 5,000 seat theater and convention center, show lounge, sport bar, gift shop, full service bank, miniature golf course, recreational vehicle park, arcade, movie theater, factory outlet stores and miscellaneous entertainment opportunities within the casino structure, according to the developers website: www.agleaf.com.
On the same weekend of the private ground breaking, West Wendover had a very public one.
The city of West Wendover began work on what is described as the largest city hall in all of rural Nevada.
Estimated to cost between $6 million and $10 million the new city hall will replace a current hodgepodge of buildings around town.
According to West Wendover Chief Financial Officer Leon Flinders?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ projections about 90 percent of the funding would be financed by a 30 year loan from the United States Department of Agriculture with the remaining $800,000 taken from the the city?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s General Fund. According to projections the General fund revenue growth is expected to generally increase for the next 11 years, Flinders said.
Most of that increase, Flinders said is contingent on the Peppermill?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s planned expansion and the construction of another casino/resort coming to pass.
