“I just did,” said Elko County Commission Chairman Demar Dahl, “what anybody would do in the same situation.”

What Dahl did, was use his personal airplane to help capture Logan Welles McFarland, 24, and Angela Marie Hill, 25, both of Sanpete County, Utah who are accused of going on a three day crime binge which included a double murder, a  violent carjacking which left a woman in critical condition with a bullet wound to the head and a home burglary.

Dahl and a fellow rancher, Randy Stowell, was using his Cessna 180 to spot some cattle which were missing and decided to look for the fugitives who, it was widely reported, were loose near Wells.

“I was flying fairly low when I spotted two people,” said Dahl, “got down a little lower and it was definitely them.

“So then, I had to get in cell phone range.

“I flew back towards I-80 where I got a signal and called the Sheriff.  By that time, I was running low on fuel, so I got a cell phone number of one of the people on the ground and guided them in directly.”

With his tanks running low, Dahl saw the arrest and headed for a local ranch where he put a few jugs of fuel in the plane, then went out and found the cattle he was looking for.

“All in all, it was a good day,” he said with a chuckle.
