A Nampa, Idaho man has only himself to blame for being arrested while transporting a large and varied selection of illegal drugs in his car last week.

Cody Bailey, 28, of Nampa made a steep $32,000 bail the day after he was arrested for a virtual cornucopia of illegal drugs that began as a routine traffic stop on US 93 for speeding.

HR BlocK 2015 AdClocked at going close to 100 mph Bailey got the attention of an Elko County Sheriff’s Deputy. According to reports he pulled over quickly and offered no resistance. When asked by the deputy for permission to search his car Bailey agreed without any hesitation.

Despite being protected by the constitution many suspects are unaware that law enforcement officers are not just being polite when they permission to search without a warrant. Police must either be in possession of a valid warrant signed by a judge or obtain permission from the suspect to conduct a legal search. Otherwise anything found in that search may be determined to be inadmissible in a court of law.

wrecaqua“In that respect cops are kind of like vampires,” said Criminal Defense Attorney and former police officer Andy Boles. “They can’t come in your home or search your car without permission. But despite the strongest protection you wouldn’t believe how many people throw away those rights when they are stopped. They should have stayed awake in civics class.”

For Bailey skipping that lesson could cost him about 10 years in prison.
