A fatal crash on I-80 Monday baffled Nevada Highway Patrol investigators.
According to NHP reports Troopers responded to a fatal crash on I-80 W/B mile marker 272 near the top of Emigrant Summit a little after noon Monday approximately 6 miles west of Carlin, Nevada.
Preliminary investigation indicates a slow moving commercial motor vehicle (semi tractor trailer) was traveling west on I-80 up a hill in the slow lane. A Chevy Impala, driven by Fredrick Brooks, age 62, from Sacramento, CA. was also traveling west on I-80. For unknown reasons, Mr. Brooks failed to change lanes to go around the semi and hit the rear of the trailer. No braking was evident. Mr. Brooks sustained fatal injuries at the scene. He was not wearing his seatbelt.
The driver of the commercial motor vehicle, Mr. James Apgar, age 65, from Iona, ID, was not injured. He was wearing his seatbelt.
