Travelers from Salt Lake City Utah, all the way to Reno Nevada, including five rural Nevada communities have fewer traveling alternatives since this past Wednesday.

Since Feb. 21. Greyhound confirmed to the High Desert Advocate that it stopped offering bus services from Salt Lake City Utah to Wendover, Elko, Battle Mountain, Lovelock, Winnemucca, and Reno, Nevada.

West Wendover City Manager Chris J. Melville talked about it at last Tuesday city meeting. Melville said that he was on the phone with Congressman Mark Amodei to put back on track the Amtrak station/stop in Wendover, talked about a few years ago.

Greyhound cited aggressive pricing from airline carriers as a key reason for pulling out of the Reno/Salt Lake market.              Greyhound will still offer service in Reno to such cities as Sacramento, San Francisco and Phoenix.       The company says it is also entering an Interline partnership with Amtrak that will allow its customers to use tickets booked through Greyhound on the train service. As part of the agreement, Amtrak will offer service to Elko and Winnemucca as well as Salt Lake City, Utah, on a similar schedule to Greyhound’s former bus service to those areas.

Travelers to Battle Mountain, Lovelock and Wendover, however, will not receive similar accommodations. Greyhound says there were not enough customers to support those routes.

We will be eliminating service from Lovelock, Battle Mountain and Wendover due to low ridership,” said Lanesha Gipson, a Greyhound spokeswoman. But we beg to differ, as we have seen those buses in Wendover, and they are pretty full.
