Dear Fellow Nevadan,

I know this is a challenging time and families across Nevada are struggling amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Our unemployment system is experiencing unprecedented need as Nevadans out of work file claims for unemployment insurance.

That’s why I’d like to share that our state launched the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program today to extend unemployment insurance to more Nevada families. PUA will be available for those affected by COVID-19 who are not eligible for traditional unemployment benefits. Payments for PUA claims are expected to begin at the end of May.

Click HERE to learn more and file a PUA claim.

The PUA program is available to many different groups of people not eligible for traditional unemployment benefits, including:

  • Self-employed
  • 1099 contract workers
  • Gig workers
  • Employees whose wages are not reported for unemployment insurance
  • Employees who have not earned enough wages or worked enough hours for regular unemployment benefits
  • Individuals who were going to start work but could not due to COVID-19 pandemic

If you are planning to file a PUA claim, here’s what to expect and some things you can do to prepare for the process:

  • Please use the earliest date that you became unemployed, partially unemployed, unable to work, or unavailable for work due to COVID-19.
  • Be honest in all your answers.
  • Have documentation of all your earnings for calendar year 2019.
  • If you choose to receive a debit card instead of direct deposit, it may take 7-14 days to receive a card. PUA will not be paid on your UI debit card if you have one.

Still have questions? Click HERE for a list of frequently asked questions about PUA, or call the PUA call center at 1-800-603-9681.

My team is always here to help. Go to my website, www.rosen.senate.gov, to get in touch with us via email or phone.

Dear Fellow Nevadan,

As a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), I’m fighting to defend the health of all Nevadans because no issue is more important to families than protecting their access to health care. Health coverage is essential, now more than ever. This is why I wanted to take a moment to encourage you and your loved ones to visit the Nevada Health Link website and enroll in health insurance coverage during the current Exceptional Circumstance Special Enrollment Period (SEP), which ends on Friday, May 15.

Those interested can do so by visiting the Nevada Health Link website or by contacting the Customer Assistance Call Center at 1-800-547-2927 between 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Nevadans who recently lost their job or had a change in income may be eligible to receive subsidy assistance to help pay for their health plans. Visit the Nevada Health Link insurance rates page for more information.

Did you also know that with a Qualifying Life Event (QLE) you may still qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) throughout the year?

Some examples of a QLE are:

  • Loss of employer-based coverage;
  • Birth or adoption of a child;
  • Gaining U.S. citizenship;
  • Denial from Medicaid;
  • Turning 26 years old;
  • Marriage or divorce;
  • Change in residence;

You usually have 60 days to enroll in a health or dental plan following a QLE. To find out if you are eligible for a SEP, please visit the Nevada Health Link website: www.nevadahealthlink.com/sep/

Dear Fellow Nevadan,

COVID-19 has created an unprecedented crisis, affecting the global economy and our way of life. The pandemic has hit Nevada’s economy especially hard, threatening the livelihoods of Nevada’s hard-working families. My number one priority is keeping Nevadans safe and economically secure, as well as ensuring you and your loved ones have access to the most up-to-date and accurate information. That is why I’m writing to you with important information on how to file a claim for unemployment benefits in Nevada.

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Actwhich I proudly voted in favor of on March 27, 2020, included several key provisions to support workers, including four months of enhanced unemployment insurance (UI), a temporary additional payment of $600 each week in Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation for workers eligible for federal or state unemployment benefits, and a new federal program called Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) for individuals who are unable to work due to the public health emergency and who are not eligible for traditional unemployment insurance, such as independent contractors and self-employed individuals.

For more information on these programs, visit the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) and the Nevada Unemployment Insurance websites.

As you may have heard, Nevada’s unemployment office is processing a high volume of claims and benefits may be delayed.

To address the UI claims backlog, DETR is requesting that people filing initial or weekly claims online, do so alphabetically by last name on certain days of the week to help with online traffic:

  • A-K on Sunday
  • L-R on Monday
  • S-Z on Tuesday
  • ALL Wednesday-Saturday

You can file a UI claim online in English and in Spanish. You can also watch tutorial videos in English and Spanish for step-by-step guidance on how to file your claim online.

You can also file a UI claim on the phone by calling:

  • Northern Nevada: (775) 684–0350
  • Southern Nevada: (702) 486–0350
  • Rural Nevada: (888) 890–8211
  • Toll-free Hotline for general questions: (800) 603-9671

You’ll need the following information to file a UI claim:

  • Social Security Number and identification, such as a driver’s license or passport;
  • Names, addresses, phone number(s), and dates you worked for your last 2 employers; and
  • A list of names (corporate name) of all employers you have worked for in the last 18 months.
  • If you are not a citizen of the United States, you must have your Alien Registration number and expiration date.
  • If you have been discharged from the military in the last 18 months, you must have a copy of your DD-214.
  • If you have worked for the Federal Government in the last 18 months, you must have a copy of your SF-8 or SF-50.

These are difficult times, but Nevadans are resilient and together we will overcome this pandemic.
