Mrs Laffoon, from the Northeast Nevada Citizen Corps and CERT Program Coordinator wrote to Mrs O’Keeffe the local West Wendover Students who participated and received a First Aid, AED, CPR certification:

I am so sorry I cannot be there with these students and their instructor today, but I would appreciate the following being read:

It is wonderful to see young adults such as these take to heart and learn skills that can be used in any Emergency or Disaster scenario or situation.

The skills they are learning are not just to get a grade or a certificate, but can be used and shared with family, friends, and their community at large.  They are becoming part of a whole community approach to making their community a safer place to live.

I do want to thank and acknowledge their instructor Ms. Christina O’Keeffe for all her hard work, and energy she gives these students, this school and community to give the gift of preparedness, The Greater Good for the Greatest Number, and life skills that will only be an asset.

I hope to continue this partnership, meet and work with other students, including any adult who would like to join us.

It should be noted the classes that have participated in this training have been mentioned in FEMA publications, in a report to the Nevada Homeland Security Commission led by the Governor, the County Commissioners, Elko County Local Emergency Planning Commission, as part of the National Youth Preparedness Strategy and more.

Thank you West Wendover High School, Administration, Staff and especially the young adults I have had the privilege to work with, and especially Ms. O’Keeffe

Thank you,Mary Ann Laffoon

Northeast Nevada Citizen Corps/CERT Program Coordinator
