So while I worked on many computers this year, I am quite often asked to clean them up to reach the best performance.  For an example, I arrived at a customer’s house that obviously kept everything clean, so it was not like they were slobs.  What this customer wanted was to get her computer cleaned.  To enhance performance on the computer, I started going through the programs and files searching for ‘junk’ files that the customer would allow me to delete.  After I removed the trash files I proceeded to dust out the internal components of the computer.  The customer told me the she cleaned the inside of her computer every week, however once I removed the screws opening the case, I removed a massive dust ball.  The processor fan inside the computer was packed solid with dust, so much so that it surprised me that the computer could even work.  Once I removed the dust and put the computer back together, it was running significantly faster.  A quick check revealed that the customer’s computer had a virus, and after removing it the computer was running as good as new.  So there are a few things that you can do to maintain your computer that you don’t need to be a tech to do.

quinnadFor routine maintenance of your personal computer, you would want to follow these easy steps.  You should  first turn off any remaining processes that activate when installing applications on your computer.  Next is to empty trash when you don’t need it,and delete any programs that you haven’t been using for at least six months.  Then you should store all of your pictures, music, and any other media onto an external drive, not on your hard drive.   And last, open the case and thoroughly clean out any dust that builds up.  Performing these few small tasks once a week will keep you from having to bring in that expensive tech to perform them for you.  I am willing to take the time to show you how to take care of these simple tasks;  it will not be very expensive and you will be able to perform these tasks for yourself.
