Fifty years after it would have made news anywhere else in the United States, Nancy Porter became the first woman District Court Judge of Elko County.

Appointed this week to the bench of retiring Michael Memeo, Porter said in an interview with the High Desert Advocate that she was well aware of the distinction and hope she could be a role model for local girls.

“I just wish my dad was here to see it,” she added wistfully. Porter’s father Dale was a long time County Commissioner and Elko City councilman. He passed away early this year.

In addition to Porter, the Nevada Governor also appointed Elko Justice of the Peace Al Kacin to the District Court bench held by the late Andrew Puccinelli who died this summer  of pancreatic cancer.

Both Porter and Kacin will have to stand for election in November 2012.

  1. Congratulations to both Nancy and Al. They are both great individuals with years of experience. I know they’ll serve us well in Elko County. Again, congrats!
