For the second time in as many years little league football may be canceled for lack of participation.
And if 40 players can’t found this year it may be quite a while before it returns, if ever.
“If we can’t put it together this year, I won’t be around next year,” said League organizer Bob Loncar.
The league has been in operation for about seven years and features intra city play among three teams.
It was founded by Loncar first to instill in Wendover elementary school children the love of the game of football and also to help improve the performance of the local high school football team the West Wendover Wolverines.
“There is a direct connection between having a good little league program and having a good high school program.” Loncar said. “Look at the State Champions of ten years ago. That was the first time the entire team had little league experience before playing high school ball. If we don’t have a decent little league program I am afraid we will never see another state championship.”
While winning the State championship in 2003, the Wolverines have not put together a winning season since 2005.
“We have 24 kids signed up now, we need just a few more to have a season,” Loncar added. “If people think the cost is too high at $80 think about it this way that’s $80 for 200 hours of baby sitting over the summer. You can’t beat that.”
Loncar explain that the largest expense was the insurance policy the league needed to buy before it could sponsor play.
“Insurance is huge, but without it we can’t play,” he said. “All we need is about a dozen more kids to sign up.”
come on Wendover the football league and Mr. Loncar and all of his helpers (supporters) have done good for the youth. Those pictured above from 10 years ago and that still may live there probably have children of their own by now. Wendover needs its youth and we need to stand behind those that don’t have alot. Support football and bring back the championship for everyone!
