Ex-city council candidate Casey Snyder began his campaign to be appointed to the seat vacated by Mayor Emily carter with an address to the body Tuesday backed by a room full of supporters.

Snyder came in third in last weeks election besting incumbent councilman Johnny Gorum by just four votes after all the ballots were counted.

While normally Snyder’s third place finish in the race for two council seats would just be for bragging rights, the fact that Carter will leave her chair to take up the mayor’s gavel leaves an opening.

While applauded by the audience and receiving the public endorsement of two councilmen, Izzy Gutierrez and Gerado Rodriguez Snyder may fall one vote short in the council vote.

“Emily told me that she was going with Johnny,” said former city councilman Mike Miera.

Miera was appointed to fill out the term of Bryant Blake six month ago and owes his appointment to Carter’s vote.

According to Miera, Carter promised him another appointment to her seat should she win the mayor’s race.

“But that was before johnny lost,” Miera sighed. “I had a meeting with her this week and she seemed adamant that Gorum would get her nod.”

Traditionally the mayor nominated the next highest vote getter in the previous election in this case that would be Snyder. However the Wendover ambulance owner has made no secret of his opposition to past council policies that Carter played a major role and his specific disagreement with the proposed bailout of the Wendover Gas Company which Carter championed.

However the council’s ratification of a Gorum appointment is not a sure thing. Of the four councilmen to be voting only Roy Briggs could be considered sure to go along with the appointment. Gutierrez would probably vote against as well as Rodriguez. It would be up to Andrade to either kill the nomination by either voting no or abstaining. If he votes aye the tie would be decided by the Mayor Carter.

“The voters have clearly stated they want a fresh start for the city, electing a new mayor and two new city councilmen.  With the Mayor-elect Carter’s council seat vacating, this will be an excellent opportunity for the mayor and our city council members to demonstrate their integrity and ethics by appointing the seat according to the voice of the electorate.” Snyder said last week.  ”This would seem especially true in a nonpartisan race, such as this.  Following the will of the people, and not succumbing to the temptation to appoint a yes man; this will be a true test of their character.”

The appointment Snyder movement is said to be gaining ground among some members of the city council and the public at large.

A petition, reprinted page two, is also circulating in the city.

“If people cant find a copy of the petition they should cut it out and use it as their own,” Snyder said.

  1. If Carter is a woman of word and says she listens to the people then she needs to nominate Snyder. The people voted Gorum out!!!!! Go with the next in votes or open it up to the public to apply.

  2. After reading this paper. I am not sure if this paper is reporting news from Nevada or Illinois (aka Chicago)?

  3. I just read an article in Wendover Times about Fact and fiction.
Their headline reads fact or fiction. Lets talk the facts. Just what has Johnny Gorum done for the city? He tends to vote with the city manager and a couple other council members. We all know who they are! They say the city is getting all this money on grants. That is true, but why don’t they tell the citizens those grants need to be paid back over time? Why don’t they tell the citizens that the city manager and the current council have got the city in debt over 20 million dollars. They say 7.6 million on a city building. Is that before or after the city manager and council put all new furniture in there at over 200,000 dollars? Then lets talk about the fancy door locks on every door at 500 dollars a door. The Wendover Blvd project was 1.6 million dollars but the city manager and the council led the public to believe that the money could only be used in that area. Facts are they could have put that money on any of their streets or split the money up on various street projects. They didn’t do that because they want to beautify the area around the city building instead of fixing the existing streets , they created more surface area and added islands that weren’t needed Its time for change in West Wendover not only with the council but with the city manager. Lets Talk Facts Wendover Times!!!!
