hcWe were surprised this week.

Our city council did not do something stupid.

It was close and stupid almost won, again.

But finally simple common sense, an endangered species here in West Wendover, finally came out on top.

Frankly we are shocked.

Fact is the city council has been approving stupid project after stupid project for quite sometime now.

Some of them sounded nice but even a cursory study of most of them showed serious flaws under estimating costs and over estimating profits.

But still West Wendover kept on building, buying and borrowing like there was no tomorrow.

And all we could do was to say we told you so after the next great attraction fell flat on its face.

‘We told you so’ did not win us very many friends and even got us the reputation of being anti-growth.

And in a sense we are.

We are against the growth of government.

We are against the growth of regulation.

We are against the growth of beautification projects and pretty lamp posts that cost a fortune but give no better light than the cheapo version.

We love wild uncontrolled capitalism where every man or woman has a right to try and fail and try again and succeed to build a little something they can pass on to their kids or sell to another dreamer.

After decades of ordinances and resolutions that kind of beautiful chaos is even more of an endangered species than common sense here.

We know it is a long way from not being stupid to being smart but still this was a very welcomed if unexpected development.
