Two years ago a bunch of so called reformers swept into Ely City government with the promise to change things.

They did change things by firing and then firing again Ely City Clerk Jim Alworth.

While a competent city clerk Alworth could be and often was insufferably rude to just about everyone he met except for the council who paid his salary.

Councils change and Alworth found himself out of a job when his did.

The reformers who got rid of Alworth then went after the railroad.

We got a sneaking suspicion that it was the manner they went after the rail road that ment their doom.

If Alworth may have be impolite but when it came to down right bad manners he had nothing on this council which raided the railroad and then spent tens of thousands of dollars looking for a theft that wasn’t.

For all its claims to being of the Wild West, perhaps because of our 19th century roots Nevada voters especially those in the rural simply cannot abide bad manners. Any public official who forgets that will not be a public official for long.
