The National Weather Service in Reno has issued an avalanche warning along the Sierra crest after a weekend storm dumped up to 20 inches of snow on the mountains around Lake Tahoe and up to a foot at lake level.
Schools opened two hours late Monday at Incline Village, where 5 inches of new snow was reported for a two-day total of 12 inches.
A high-wind advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Monday at Tahoe and at Pyramid Lake northeast of Reno. The service said both lakes could see wind gusts up to 45 mph and 2- to 4-foot waves.
On Sunday, the strong winds toppled a 30-foot box trailer being towed south of Carson City, and likely caused a power outage that affected as many as 7,000 people in Washoe County for several hours.
